Chances are you bought your laptop so you could use a computer comfortably while lying on your bed or while sitting on a sofa.
One of the advantages of buying a portable computer is that you can use it in a casual setting. However it is important to note that care must still be taken while using a laptop in order to avoid overheating it.
Just like we wouldn't smother out desktops with cushions and mattresses, Laptops too need some breathing space! On all laptops one will find small vents at multiple locations which are provided for the computer to have a healthy flow of air inside it. This keeps the internals of the computer relatively cool, and insures that the components do not get damaged.
While using a laptop care must be taken to ensure that nothing blocks the air flow to these vents. While the placement varies with different laptop models, a common point is that there will be an inlet for the cooler air outside and and outlet for the hot air. In many of the common laptop usage scenarios, you might find that you are accidentally blocking one or both of these vents. Take care to always keep your Laptop on a flat hard surface while using it so that there is enough room for airflow. Also make sure that any vents on the sides are not obstructed by any objects that are lying around your computer.
While today's computers are smart enough to just shut down in such a scenario, it is still wiser to err in the side of caution and take precautions that such a thing does not happen. Even if the computer is not damaged, you stand to loose your active data in case on an unexpected thermal shutdown.
